“Coming out of the closet” that society should never have forced us into is an act of tremendous courage. Talking to parents, friends, and coworkers can feel like a monumental task, often bringing anxiety and emotional distress. Have you ever stopped to think about why that is? It happens because we were raised in a society that, until just over 30 years ago, classified love as a pathology; in a society built on a patriarchal binary system, where not identifying with the body assigned at birth is judged and, in some places, even condemned.
Homophobia extends far beyond Argentina’s borders. Same-sex relationships remain illegal in more than 80 countries, and in 10 of them they are punishable by death. These figures increase dramatically when we consider the many other human rights violations that the LGBTIQ+ community continues to face around the world.
